Accident black spots renamed
The government are starting to put up signs to warn drivers of accident black spots and some of these will also see radar traps installed as an additional measure to keep drivers’ speeds down. They have decided to rename them. These were previously known as ‘puntos negros’ (black spots), but now a risky section of road will be called a ‘tramo de concentración de accidentes’ or ‘stretch of accident concentration’.
There are 776 accident black spots across Spain. The worst areas in Tenerife are the busy TF-1 and TF-5 motorways, which contain some 19 dangerous areas, however the blackest spot is the road between La Laguna and La Punta, which clocks up about 11 casualties a year. Next most dangerous is the TF-1 in the south. From Los Cristianos to Chafiras at 0.1 kilometer, the TF-652 between Las Galletas and Las Chafiras, and the TF-64.
The signs are put up as part of a nationwide 1.2 billion € plan of road improvements which runs until 2012.
