Keeping in touch in Tenerife
In days gone by, expatriates used to feel quite isolated from their home countries. Mail was slow, newspapers at least a few days old and they felt quite separated from their own culture. Often feeling like exiles, they begged visiting family to bring exotic provisions; jars of marmite, Easter eggs and Christmas presents.
Modern communications have put an end to that, at least for British and Irish Expats in Tenerife. You can be as much in touch with your own culture as you want, in all sorts of ways. Communication costs have come down, and this has affected us in so many ways: phones, internet, newspapers, magazines, television, radio… there is so much available in the English language.
Of course, if you are using the internet to shop, then you will also probably rely on the post and couriers. Whatever you are told, there is no 48 hour service to Tenerife. If you use Fedex and complain enough when the package is delivered late (it will be), they should deliver it free.
You can find out much more about keeping in touch when you live in Tenerife by ordering the Tenerife Lifeline book.
