New Traffic Regulations affect Tenerife

New laws traffic laws have been passed, of which the most important for Drivers in Tenerife are:

• Drivers can pay traffic fines on the spot, using a credit card if they wish, and will get a 50% reduction (currently 30%).  In doing so, they waive the right to contest the fine.
• The number of traffic offences for which points are removed from your licence reduces from 27 to 20.  The procedure is simplified for drivers, but made more obstructive for those companies which aim to help people avoid the fines.
• Small infractions will be given upto a €100 fine, such as riding a bike with no reflectors
• Serious infractions will get a €200 fine, such as stopping or parking in a bus lane
• Very serious offences, such as driving a vehicle with radar blocking technology, will get a €500 fine
• If you commit an offence you will get 2 notices informing you instead of 3
• You can choose to get these notices via email
• New laser speedtraps that record speed between 2 points that can be several KM apart will be brought in. 

We will publish a list of these new laser speed traps as soon as they are installed in Tenerife, but this will be next year at the earliest.
